PANJIM: For 15 years, farmers from Marna, Sodiem are unable to cultivate their fields due to the accumulation of water. The pipes under the bridge are clogged with mud and other debris causing severe problems for the farmers. “15 years ago we used to cultivate our fields. Because of the bridge, the pipes get clogged with mud and the water can’t get through,” said a farmer and former Sarpanch of Siolim.

The farmers’ request to resolve this issue was put forth before the former Siolim MLA Vindo Paliencar but in vain.

The farmers on Monday visited MLA Delilah Lobo who contacted a junior engineer to inquire about the issue. The JE said that a contract has been given and a tender is passed for the said project. However, a stay order is pending.

“If the issue is resolved, farmers from Marna, Siolim and Sodiem can cultivate their fields and reap the benefits of their hard work,” said the farmer.

The road in the middle of the field also needs attention, they claim. “Heavy rains will damage part of the road and the mud will enter the field,” he said.

Panch member Siolim Panchayat, William Fernandes said that the work on the road is still in progress. “We have informed the MLA about the road, and I’m sure the issue will be resolved soon,” said Fernandes.
