PANJIM: The issue of overcharging by taxis was taken up by almost every MLA in the House Wednesday, but Transport Minister Ramakrishna Dhavalikar stopped short of giving a definitive assurance on the issue.
Members cutting across party lines, highlighted how overcharging by taxis was giving
Transport Minister Ramakrishna Dhavalikar promised that installation of electronic meters would be implemented for tourist taxis as well as auto rickshaws, but refused to commit regarding the date.
“Tourists taxis have become a nuisance bringing a bad name for the State. Every tourist complains about the excess fares charged by them….they say they don’t charge according to fare chart. Meters are a must for taxis. When the government provides subsidy, they should be asked to fit meters with proper software. We can also introduce radio cabs,” Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte suggested.
Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco also called for disciplining of taxi operators saying that they are looting the tourists. However his party colleague Caetano Silva came in support of the taxi drivers saying that nobody cares for their plight and that the government should support them especially since many of them come from poorer sections of society.
