No direct connection between potholes & accidents: Mauvin

VASCO: Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Tuesday claimed there is no direct connection between potholes and road accidents. 
“People should wear helmets and obey safety measures which are for their own safety,” he said speaking at a State Road Safety Week function, held at Ravindra Bhavan, Baina.
Godinho in his keynote address asked, “why safety only during the safety week? In fact we should be safe always and every day”.
“Several accidents are taking place in Goa. Are we serious about road safety issues and there is a time to think about it,” he added.
Commenting on the recent debate among people over bad road conditions and accidents, Godinho reiterated that there is no direct connection of accidents and bad road condition, but also agreed that roads need to be in good condition.
Godinho also stated that govt is trying to improve public transport and road connectivity in Goa.
He said, “There have been debates on the new MV Act and increased fines, but the BJP leaders at the Centre have taking into consideration people’s lives, discipline on the road, and have decided to enforce the law strictly.
He also stated, the students who buy new vehicles need to be more cautious about road safety. They are supposed to follow the rules and be discipline. Life will be much better if each citizen follows the rules and regulations. This will be a step towards moving our nation forward.
“Remember that your near and dear ones need you,” he added.
He revealed that he is willing to activate the Traffic Committee in the villages and in towns. 
Godinho also encouraged traffic, transport officials to create awareness programmes in their areas.
