No end in sight for Vasco’s parking woes

VASCO: Port town is yet to solve the problem of lack of space for parking. Add to this, people have been parking their vehicles haphazardly in the town further reducing the scarce space for parking. Two-wheelers are parked on the footpath of municipal building obstructing the pedestrian movement.
Some months ago, during a meeting with the municipal chairman, the then Vasco Traffic Police Inspector Suraj Samant had highlighted several issues relating to parking in the port town. He had pointed out that encroachments on parking spaces have not been cleared by the municipality. He had also highlighted that the debris on both the sides of the roads in the town need to be cleared, so that, the space can be used for parking. However, the debris dumped along the road has not been cleared till date.
A port town resident opines that haphazard parking in front of the municipal building is due to improper road markings in Vasco.
“If MMC makes the space in front of the municipal building as pay parking, then, most of the people will have enough space for parking. I feel that the municipal staffers or guards should not allow anyone from parking their two-wheelers on footpath in front of the municipal building,” he said.
A visitor to the town Sumit Naik said that the people coming from other areas to Vasco have no space for parking. “It gives bad picture that two wheelers are parked on the footpath close to the municipal office and yet the municipality does nothing about it,” he said.
When contacted, MMC Chairperson Nandadeep Raut assured that he would issue instructions to the municipal guards to stop people from parking on the footpath in front of the municipal building.
