No fire safety devices in MMC yet

VASCO: Despite a recommendation by the Vaso fire services to place fire extinguishers in 20 key places in the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building, the MMC is yet to install the fire safety devices in its premises.

Acting on a Herald report highlighting the lack of fire extinguishers in the MMC building, the Vasco fire services promptly inspected the premises and suggested about 20 points to install the fire extinguishers to tackle fire incidents in the council premises.
“The fire service officials inspected the council premises and identified 20 vulnerable spots and directed MMC Chief Officer Megnath Porob to install 10 small and 10 large fire extinguishers to tackle any fire mishap in the offices,” informed a source.
Despite the directives, the MMC has failed to install the fire extinguishers at the recommended locations in the MMC building.
When asked to comment on the MMC’s failure to install the fire extinguishers, Porob replied: “The fire extinguishers are not yet installed, as the Goa State Urban Development Authority (GSUDA) has decided to take up renovation work of the MMC building.”
When reminded that the GSUDA had been planning the renovation work since the past two years, Porob said: “The work will start shortly as the estimated cost for the renovation of the MMC building has already been prepared by GSUDA.”
To another query on whether the GSUDA had set any specific date to start the renovation work, Porob decline to comment.
Sources in the administrative section informed Herald that the fire extinguishers could easily be installed in MMC premises, even during renovation work.
“The installation of fire extinguishers in the MMC premises need not be affected during renovation work, the fire equipments can be safely stored in one place, while renovation work is in progress,” said an official.
