No fishing for these souls

POINGUINIM: Talpona the coastal belt in Canacona taluka is inhabited by people whose prime occupation is fishing and many of them use trawlers, small motorized boards and small canoes to catch fish and sell it in the market.

Since the past three years their boats are in idle state as they cannot take them in the ocean from the Talpona river jetty from the bay to the Arabian sea is silted and the bay is choked due to the silt that has accumulated and the water level is barely knee deep.
Local fisherman Sudesh Toraskar while speaking to Team Herald sai that they had made representation to the chief minister Digambar Kamat and also to the local MLA Ramesh Tawadkar to take measures to desilt the water body but their pleas have remained unanswered.
Some of them had taken loans from the banks for their fishing activity but today they are not able to pay the loans that they had obtained.
It is a peak time for fishing but a visit to the Talpona jetty revealed they were on the docks firmly covered with thick polythene sheets.
The fisher folks who sustain their livelihood by catching fish were seen throwing the nets by walk in the river and are catching fish that are of not marketable value.
Fisherman Mahesh Toraskar said that the people living upstream of the river dump garbage and other materials that gets accumulated at the bay point and has choked the river bed. That apart he attributed to the silting of the river bed due to thick growth of mangroves which needs to be cut down.
 Presently the fisher folks are living in a precarious condition and they are facing a tough time as they cannot venture into the sea as their boats cannot cross from the Talpona river jetty into the Arabian sea to catch the prized catch.
