MARGAO: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s time frame of August 15 to rid Seraulim village of the two waste dumps has expired, but residents maintained that there’s no change in the ground reality       till date.
During his visit to Seraulim over a month ago, the Chief Minister had assured agitated villagers that the authorities would get the two waste dumps cleared by August 15. That’s not all. Villagers claim that the CM had promised to cull the pigs reared near the two waste dumps, since they were causing inconvenience to the local populace.
Social activist Rodney Almeida told Herald that nothing has changed at the ground level till date even though the Chief Minister had promised to clear the dumps by August 15. “The residents will meet soon to chalk out the future course of action,” he said.
Incidentally, news spread in the village that the waste brought by the two garbage contactors in the village might stop from tomorrow as the hotels have been directed not to hand over the waste to the contractors.
Meanwhile, Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva on August 5 wrote a letter to the Chief Minster to urgently find a solution to the menace in Seraulim caused by the garbage dump. “It is almost three months now and it looks like there is no solution to the issue. There have been 17 cases of malaria reported three days from the same ward. The foul smell is unbearable due to the water logging in the area,” Caitu said in his letter while seeking intervention of the Chief Minister to stop the menace.
He lamented that no action has been initiated by any authority except for a letter which has been issued by the Pollution Control Board to the Seraulim Pancahyat to clear the garbage dumps, which the panchayat has not been able to do                         for  quite long.
