PANJIM/MARGAO: Goa Police has ruled out any Goa link with the murder of gangster Anwar Sheikh alias Tiger, who was brutally killed by a group of four men in the middle of a road at his native village in Haveri District, Karnataka.
Imran Chowdhary was soon arrested on charges of murder while the others had escaped from the crime scene on Sunday.
“Imran was besides the body after killing Tiger. He handed himself over to the police when the team arrived at the spot. Others escaped,” sources told Herald.
It is learnt that Tiger was threatening the men demanding hafta, to which they retaliated with an axe. On the fateful day, Anwar went to the garage owners demanding hafta and they refused.
Sources said Anwar then tried to threaten them with a pistol he was carrying but his attackers were quick to assault him with the axe. “The attackers seen in the viral video are related to each other. They had decided to kill Tiger as they were tired of his constant demand for hafta,” sources said.
Police said that there was old rivalry between Imran and Anwar. However, so far there has been no Goa link that has been established with the murder.
Anwar, a history sheeter, had nearly 28 heinous crime cases registered against him, mainly in Goa.
Fatorda Police Inspector Kapil Naik, said that in the incident reported on February 16, at Arlem, Anwar was shot at and assaulted, for which Ricky Hornekar, Vally D’Costa, Imran Bepari, Vipul Pattari, Harshvardhan Sawal, Sudhan da Costa were arrested.
However, Additional Sessions Judge Vincent D’Silva had discharged Vijay Karbotkar and Mahendra Tanawade in the attempt to murder Anwar.
At the moment only Vally D’Costa and Ricky Hornekar are in custody and all others have been granted bail by the court.
There were externment proceedings pending with South Goa Collector against the Anwar, besides nearly 28 crime cases including rape, murder, extortion, and threats cases registered at various police stations in Goa.
