PANJIM: Secretary (Revenue) Sanjay Kumar on Wednesday said that the committee constituted to identify land to set up a permanent campus for the proposed IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) in Goa is yet to finalise the site for the institute.
“We inspected one site near Goa Engineering College (GEC), Farmagudi and we could not visit/inspect other places due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation. We are yet to finalise the land to set up the permanent campus for proposed IIT in Goa,” Kumar, who is heading the committee constituted by the government, told Herald.
Following stiff opposition by the villagers of Shel-Melaulim in Sattari taluka, the government in January this year had scrapped its plan to set up the IIT campus there and announced relocation of the project.
Accordingly, in March, the government constituted a committee to identify land to set up the permanent campus for the IIT in Goa.
Before, Shel-Melaulim, the government had identified land in Canacona and Sanguem talukas for the proposed project. However, the IIT project was opposed by the people in Canacona while, the government dropped its plan to set up the campus in Sanguem taluka due to difficulties faced in acquiring the land owned by many people as well tenants.
