MARGAO: Raia Panchayat on Wednesday said the concerned department has not obtained any No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the local body regarding the ongoing construction of the compound wall for the new Maina-Curtorim Police Station project in the village.

It may be recalled that on Tuesday, residents of Saint Xavier ward of Raia had objected to the ongoing work of cleaning and levelling of the hilly area for the above project, citing that it is a disputed area. However, the concerned authorities went ahead with the work without displaying any signboard.

Sarpanch Minguelina D’Souza said the concerned department is yet to apply for the NOC.

The sarpanch said, “After receiving information about the activity, we rushed to the site to take stock of the situation. We found that the concerned authorities have not obtained the required NOC from the panchayat.”

She admitted that the said land was acquired long ago by the Police Department to construct the police station. However, the panchayat has no objection to the project but it was necessary to obtain the NOC from the local body.

“A few days ago another such incident was reported in the same area. Now, the panchayat has asked the concerned department to apply for the NOC to construct the compound wall,” Minguelina said.

On the other hand, the residents have demanded that work be stopped till the authorities carry out the same legally.

Recently, another incident was reported at Bakhatt, Raia with regards to an “illegal” hill cutting for a housing complex. The concerned builder had carried out the “illegal” activity without obtaining permission from the both the Town and Country Planning Department and the panchayat.
