PANJIM: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president Sadanand Shet Tanavade was on Thursday elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha.
Tanavade was the only candidate who filed his nomination for the lone seat from Goa though the formal announcement will be made on July 24, which was the polling day.
This is for the first time that the Rajya Sabha nominee has been declared unopposed from Goa. The term of current MP Vinay Tendulkar ends on July 28.
The opposition Congress had said it would not field candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat as it did not have enough MLAs in the 40-member Assembly.
Tanavade had been BJP’s MLA from 2002 to 2007 elected from Tivim constituency. He was elected as the party’s State president in January 2020.
