MARGAO, OCT 4
Day one of the process of filing nomination papers on Monday saw no candidate filing nomination paper before Returning Officer, Margao Johnson Fernandes.
However, the office of the Returning Officer received the first complaint on violation of the code of conduct, indicating the state of things to come in the run up to the polls scheduled on October 31.
Former Councilor Sadanand Naik lodged a complaint with the Returning officer on Monday morning stating that his rival and sitting Councilor Raju “Hadlee” Shirodkar
was supervising the work of laying slabs over a storm water drain.
Sadanand has contended that Shirodkar has no business to supervise the work as the code of conduct has already come in force.
Shirodkar, however, told newsmen that he has not violated the code of conduct. The Councilor claimed that he visited the site as the drain was choked and workers were working to lay the new slabs. “Where is the question of violating the code of conduct? I just made my presence as the drain was choked,” he added.
Returning officer Johnson Fernandes told Herald that he has sought a detailed report from the Margao Municipal Council as the name of MMC was embossed on the RCC slabs. “I have received the first complaint on the violation of the code of conduct and my office has taken serious note of the incident. Appropriate action will be initiated after receiving report from the Margao Civic body,” the Returning officer stated.
