PONDA: After much media coverage and persistent objections raised by locals, authorities concerned have finally erected ‘no parking’ signs alongside the accident-prone highway from Bethora to Baythakhol. After a body of a local was found in the pit on the roadside at Kajarwada-Bethora, locals had strongly opposed the parking of heavy vehicles on the sides of the road.
Taking the demands from locals into consideration, sarpanch Madhu Khandeparkar had discussed the matter with the PWD (Roads) engineers and resolved to erect ‘no parking’ signs along the dangerous stretch of the highway.
Locals have heaved a sigh of relief over the action but have also expressed uncertainty over whether the truck owners will continue to follow the rules in the future. It can be recalled that the South Goa District Collector had passed an order a few years ago banning the parking of heavy vehicles along the bypass but it was not implemented.
PWD as well as traffic police have cooperated tremendously to implement the order passed by the Collector.
There have been many fatal mishaps on the road in the past and soon street lamps will be erected on the widened road,” said sarpanch Khandeparkar.
