No relief to LIC employees from poll duties

PANJIM: The LIC employees will also be called for election duty for the Lok Sabha polls scheduled to be held in Goa on May 7 as the High Court of Bombay at Goa on Monday refused to stay the orders of the North Goa and South Goa election officers engaging LIC employees for election duties.

Hearing a writ petition filed by the Goa LIC Employees Union, the Court agreed with the contention of the Election Commission of India (ECI) that the elections are round the corner and staying the order may affect the poll process.

But, admitting the writ petition the High Court has adjourned the matter for further hearing after summer vacation.

During the last hearing, the Court had asked The Election Commission of India (ECI) to file an affidavit stating whether it had shortage of government staff deployed for poll duty and to give reasons for requisition of LIC staff.

The Goa LIC Employees Union though its general secretary Walter Martin Piedade Fernandes had filed a writ petition seeking exemption of the LIC staff from the general Lok Sabha elections.
