PORVORIM: Employees at the Gomantak Marathi Academy (GMA) in Porvorim have not received their salaries since the last eight months.
Though the State government had stopped grants to the Academy from financial year 2012-13, then chief minister Manohar Parriker had released the salary grants to the GMA till 2013-14. Since April, seven employees have not received their salaries.
After receiving the Vishnu Wagh Committee Report on an inquiry into the functioning of the GMA, the government had warned it to implement all recommendations of the report within four weeks, failing which the government had threatened to stop further grants.
The state government then stopped the grants to the academy on grounds that the GMA did not implement the Vishnu Wagh Committee recommendations.
One of the staffers said if their salaries are not paid, they would be forced to fight for their rights, and, if necessary, go on a hunger strike.
