No shortage of dal from next year: Food Minister Paswan

PANJIM: Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan, on Friday said that 1.25 lakh families in Goa are without LPG connections and he has asked the department to issue connections under the Ujala scheme.

Speaking in Panjim, Paswan said the Civil Supplies Department had sought applications from such families but hardly 13,000 applications have been received.
He said the kerosene quota for families without LPG has now been increased to 14 litres per month from the existing quota.
Speaking about the shortage and rise in price of dal, he said there is a 246 lakh tonne requirement of dal at present, however the annual increase in requirement is 1 million tonnes. “There won’t be shortage of dal from next year, the price rise is due to the shortage of it and it will be taken care of,” Paswan said.
He said Goa’s monthly requirement of grains is 5000 tonnes whereas the godown capacity is about 20,000 tonnes which is four months demand of grain.
