CALANGUTE: Following a demand from the Calangute panchayat biodiversity management committee (BMC), Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has assured that no trees would be cut for road widening on the stretch from St Alex Church to Bhodkovodd junction.
The panchayat BMC at a recent meeting had taken a resolution to protect the roadside trees. BMC members then met the MLA and informed him of their resolution.
“The committee has decided to protect the trees. I’ve told the Public Works Department (PWD) to do the road alignment so that the trees will be in the middle of the road where the dividers will be. No trees will be cut,” Lobo said.
He said the road is being widened by seven meters on one side. “I’ve told the PWD to put markers where the dividers will come so that the BMC members know the position,” the MLA said.
BMC member Premanand Divkar said the MLA has told them that the PWD will be drawing up the new alignment and show them the plan before starting the road widening work. “These are age-old trees and the beauty of Calangute. We will protect them at any cost,” he said.
