Cuncolim: Eight councillors, including seven supporters of Opposition Leader Yuri Alemao, and one independent councilor have issued a no-confidence motion against Cuncolim Municipal Council Chairperson Laxman Naik. The notice has been signed by Councillors Landry Mascarenas, Raymond D’Souza, John Dias, Anthony Vaz, Jamira Pires, Rekha Fernandes, Gauri Shetkar and Independent Councilor Udesh Desai.
Laxman Naik is in danger of losing his chairpersonship as eight out of 14 councillors are signatories to the no-trust notice.
Since the last 27 months Laxman was occupying the chair, the councillors had made several unsuccessful attempts to dethorne him.
Yuri’s supporters-councillors say that Laxman Naik was given the post of CP for two years after which the post had to be rotated among other councillors. It appears even MLA Yuri Alemao has asked CP Laxman Naik to resign but Naik did not agree leading to the NCM against him.
Meanwhile, Naik told media that he will not resign from the post. “I have not done anything wrong and will face the motion. Let the truth prevail,” he said
