However, Monteiro denied the charge and stated that he had always acted in the larger interest of the village when it came to development work during his three-year reign. He claimed he had never lobbied for the post, which he took up after encouragement from the other members. He felt confident about facing the no-confidence motion as he had done nothing wrong.
Playing down his political ambitions, Monteiro said he always maintained transparency and that he had olanned to step down anyway after completing a few pending works.
