PANJIM: The North District & Sessions Court will pronounce on Thursday the sentence against St Cruz youth Norman Fernandes, convicted for killing his sister and her mother-in-law in 2013.
During the final arguments on the quantum of sentence, the defence contested the prosecution’s submission that Norman should be awarded the death penalty. “The case doesn’t fall in the rarest of the rare cases. Since his arrest (September 2013), Norman is behind bars so the court should take a lenient view,” the defence stated. The police had sought capital punishment for the accused.
The court had convicted Norman last week for killing his sister Noreen Fernandes e Vaz and her mother-in-law Aurita Vaz on September 2, 2013 over a property dispute. Noreen’s husband Edgar Vaz was also seriously hurt in the attack.
