North Goa Collector seeks compliance from Excise Dept to curb drink-and-drive cases

Directions issued after the North Goa District Road Safety Committee observed that a lot of compliances are pending, including installing signages, rumblers and painting of zebra crossings

PANJIM: The District Collector of North Goa Mamu Hage has sought compliance from the Excise Department on the measures that they had suggested in the earlier meeting for curbing the drink-and-drive cases in Goa. 

The North Goa District Road Safety Committee meeting was held on the Tuesday under the chairmanship of District Collector. However, important stakeholder departments like Excise, Panchayats and Municipalities were found missing at the meeting. 

The District Magistrate Hage in addition to the issues of painting speed breakers, taking steps to control stray dogs and cattle menace, and roadside hoardings, also discussed the matter of the compliances of the Excise Department to control the drink-and-drive cases in Goa. 

“We have been told that the bars have put signages and messages at their premises. However, they are not permanent structures and hence they have fallen off. There is a committee monitoring this,” said Hage. 

“I have told that Excise Department can’t be missing this meeting. I have also sought the list of such bars and establishments where signages and messages have been installed. There can be a physical inspection after we have a list,” she said. 

In addition to these, the District Collector also observed that a lot of compliances of as far as signages, rumblers and zebra crossings are pending. “I have given a direction that all the pending matters have to be complied with. Once the PWD has a list of speed breakers they will be in a better position to take necessary steps to control accidents arising from the deficiencies,” the District Collector said.
