PORVORIM: Stating that he is not interested in developmental works against wishes of locals, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has assured residents of Penha de Franca that he will ask authorities to stop construction work of the new market complex near Maruti Temple at Porvorim.
Khaunte was addressing people who had gathered on the ground near Maruti Temple to oppose the market project on Tuesday.
“The Goa Housing Board commenced the work of the market complex after obtaining clearances from the Town and Country Planning Department and Penha de Franca Panchyat,” Khaunte told the people.
“I am not interested in taking up any developmental works against the wishes of locals. Considering the sentiments of the locals who have gathered here, I will direct authorities to stop the ongoing work,” assured Khaunte.
“As Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is out of the State, I will again discuss this matter with him on his return,” added Khaunte.
BJP Mandal President Guruprasad Pawasker stated that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has undertaken a lot of developmental works in Porvorim.
“However in the name of development, the only playground which is left in Porvorim should not be utilized to construct a market complex,” said Pawasker.
In response to the call given by Porvorim Residents Association (PRA), hundreds of people gathered on the ground near Maruti Temple at about 5 pm on Tuesday to protest against construction of the market complex.
The PRA office bearers informed the gathering that they have already submitted a memorandum to the chief minister and chairman of Goa Housing Board registering their protest against construction of the complex.
Govind Parvatkar, Prasad Phatarpekar and Sunil Khauthanker also spoke.
