PANJIM: The Goa Human Rights Commission issued a notice to the Aguada Jail Superintendent, asking him to appear before it on March 6 after a former convict filed a complaint alleging misappropriation of money from his bank account.
Sawantwadi-based Suhas Joshi, a convict who was released in December 2012, after serving a life sentence for murder, complained to the Goa State Human Rights Commission on January 31, that 50 per cent deduction of his remuneration for work done by him was not being deposited in the fund and his family had not received any money.
Jail Superintendent Gopal Parsekar refused to comment, but said tersely, “You will get the comments in Court on March 6.”
Joshi was set free on December 26, 2012 after serving 19 years in two jails ~11 years in Pune and eight years at Aguada, for double murder at Nariman Point in Mumbai in November 1994.
“…during jail term, the administration allotted me a job at handicraft unit of that prison (Aguada) in 2008 and 2009. Fifty per cent deduction of my wages, which were supposed to be deposited in my victim’s survival account, is misappropriated by the prison administration of the State of Goa,” he said, requesting the commission’s intervention.
Joshi’s daily earning was Rs 40, of which 50 per cent was being deposited in his personal account and the rest was for his family. To his horror he discovered only Rs 900 in his jail account at State Bank of India’s Candolim branch when he checked it after his release. The convict said he had transferred Rs 14,000 in his account when he was shifted to Aguada from Pune, which also has also gone missing.
