PANJIM: The Directorate of Panchayat on Wednesday issued notification announcing elections for 186 village panchayats (VPs) on June 11.
The elections would be held in 1,522 wards spread across 186 panchayats. The five-year term of these panchayats ends on May 26.
As per the notification issued by the Secretary Panchayat Sanjay Goel, the maximum numbers of 279 wards are in Bardez taluka that has 33 village panchayats, followed by Salcete which has 250 wards spread across 30 VPs.
The Ponda taluka, which has 19 VPs stands third with 167 wards, followed by 158 wards in Tiswadi with 18 VPs. Pernem and Bicholim talukas with 17 VPs each, has 129 and 125 wards respectively.
The two-year-old Dharbandora taluka has the lowest number of VPs and wards. Having just five panchayats, it has 41 wards. The Canacona and Sanguem taluka with seven panchayats each has got 57 and 53 wards respectively. While Mormugao has 88 wards in its 10 VPs, Sattari has 94 wards in 12 panchayats.
Goel said the process for nomination would begin once the State Election Commission announces its schedule.
The nominations will be filed before the Returning Officers in each talukas.
