Now, cops in mufti to take photos, nab motorists breaking traffic rules

MAPUSA: The Goa police have begun a unique drive to nab violators of the Motor Vehicle Act, who manage to give them the slip during routine enforcement drives conducted at nakabandhis or check-points.

Policemen will now roam the streets in plain clothes, and use their phone cameras to get pictures of violators- usually two-wheeler riders without helmets, commuters travelling ‘triples’ on their bikes, motorists driving on the wrong side of the road, among other violations. On Tuesday alone, the police found 145 violators, who will receive challans. “It is seen that public are violating Motor Vehicle Act by not wearing helmet, travelling triple seat, not wearing seat belts and whenever they see the policemen in uniform, they either try to overspeed or they take other routes to escape from being punished,” said a statement from the Mapusa police on Tuesday.

“To overcome such practices, SDPO Mapusa Jivba Dalvi has deployed policeman in plain clothes at all police stations in Mapusa sub division – at Mapusa, Anjuna and Colvale police station jurisdictions. The staff are directed to click photographs of violators of MV Act and submit the report to this office, for forwarding the same to the Notice Branch DySP, Traffic, Altinho, Panaji to issue notices,” added the statement.
