MARGAO: Upset with the mishandling of the Sonsoddo dump yard, several councillors of the Margao Municipality have also called for the High Court’s intervention, to keep strict vigilance over the quality of work, and recurrent expenditure of public funds on the bioremediation of the waste.
On Wednesday, the Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) had made serious allegations against the civic authorities and contracted agencies for adopting crude methods of disposing the hundreds of tonnes of ‘legacy’ waste accumulated at the site.
“We are only hearing assurances and witnessing inspections, but nothing beyond that. One thing is clear that the civic body is not serious about the issue, but shockingly, taxpayers’ money money is being wasted on it, year after year,” said Councillor Camilo Barreto.
He informed Herald that he has accompanied the higher-ups for several inspections, but nothing practical has come out of them.
Another senior MMC councillor, who did not wish to be named, said, “What we have noticed at the site is just an eye wash. The garbage is simply being moved from one spot to another on the site, to make space for the garbage generated by the Municipality on a daily basis,” he alleged.
“Time has come for the people of Margao and Fatorda to take on the task of the civic body and the political leaders who have only given timelines and assurances, but have never delivered,” he remarked.
