PANJIM: After scaling astronomical heights, onion prices, are on a downslide with rates dropping to around Rs 55 from a recent high of almost Rs 80 per kg.
The State government rates are around 20% lower, with the horticulture corporation carts selling it at Rs 47 and the vans at Rs 37.
This 20% subsidy is over and above, the existing subsidy offered by the government.
“As part of the government moves in view of the extremely high prices of onions, the corporation is selling them at prices which are 20% lesser than the market rate. The prices of other vegetables continue to remain the same,” Managing Director of the State Horticulture Corporation said.
After the prices of onions touched nearly Rs 80 in the open market, a concerned government decided to subsidize onions by 20% through the Goa State Horticulture Corporation.
The GSHC was already started selling vegetables at cost prices without including the packaging and transport cost which was also being borne by the government.
Meanwhile prices of vegetables especially green chillies continue to be high, pushing up eatable prices in restaurants even for the most simple Indian snacks.
A weakening Rupee accompanied by a bleak economic situation has only worsened the situation for the common man in general.
