PANJIM: The general public can now get archival documents translated online from Portuguese to English through 15 government empanelled translators at a cost of Rs 350 per page, which could be also used in “preventing and identifying attempts of land grab scams”.
The Archives Department will also undertake digitisation of nearly three crore documents, which are in its possession in a phased manner.
Launching the Online Portuguese Translation Service at a function organised by the Department of Archives at the Secretariat, Porvorim on Tuesday, Archives Minister Subhash Phal Desai said that this service would facilitate time-bound and authentic translations and people can translate documents from 15 empanelled translators at Rs 350per page.
The Minister said that the State Archives department is one of the oldest Archives Department of South Asia, and possessing archival records since 1498.
“The archival records will be made available to the public through secured software, which will ensure that these are not misused. The mechanism will help prevent and help identify attempts of land grab scams,” Phal Desai said.
He further said that the department will connect with Lisbon, Portugal to check if digitised and non-digitised records related to Goa could be acquired by the State from them.
