VALPOI: With no action forthcoming despite requesting the government to declare bison and monkey as vermin animals, Sattari farmers have now decided to kill these animals as they pose threat to their agricultural crops.
This decision was taken by the Sattari farmers at a special meeting held in Shantadurga temple hall, Nagargao, on Sunday, which was attended by around 200 farmers.
“Enough is enough, the Government has failed to take action against these animals. So now we have decided to kill these animals. Besides this there is no manure available in Zonal Agriculture Office, Valpoi for our crops. To add to our woes, the forest department has failed to grow trees which can serve as food for these animals,” the farmers complained.
“Our agriculture crops need to be protected from such animals. So time and time again we have demanded that the Government declare bison and monkey as vermin,” demanded Ashok Joshi, a farmer.
“The Government is ready to declare the buffer zone within one km distance in the mining areas, as per mine owners’ demand. But it is not ready to declare animals such bison and monkey as vermin,” said Manikrao Rane, another farmer.
“In Goa, the Forest Department has grown the unwanted trees in the forest such as Akashi, which don’t serve any purpose for these animals,” said Ranjitsing Rane.
