PANJIM: The Niz Ramponkarancho Ekvott (NRE) has reminded the State government that there is neither any progress on notification of the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) nor there was any move to demarcate houses of fishermen before CZMP of 2019 is prepared.

The NRE said that during the public consultation process, a draft comprehensive plan for fishermen was placed in public domain inviting objections and suggestions.

The CRZ Notification 2011 allows the fishermen and local community to construct structures between 100 and 200 metres from high tide line (HTL) provided the comprehensive plan is approved by both — State and Central government — National Coastal Zone Management Authority (NCZMA). Since the Centre granted approval for CZMP 2011 in September 2022, the NRE has requested the government to expedite and approve the comprehensive plan for fishermen so that they get their rightful benefits to construct their dwelling units within 100 to 200 metres.

“This also requires approval of NCZMA. We request the concerned to please follow up and notify the comprehensive plan for fishermen. Also, during public consultation it was assured to demarcate the houses of traditional fishermen and members were notified for the committee. Our community should also be allowed to explore alternative livelihood. Options by partly permitting commercial activities related to tourism such as guest houses, home stays, bars and restaurants, general shops and any activity related to tourism,” said representatives of NRE.

The NRE also said that existing dwellings/houses of the fishermen along with their huts (kudd) net mending area, canoe restoring area, landing area, between the inter-tidal zone, should reflect on the CZMP Plan.
