PANJIM: In the backdrop of booking of a swimming coach for rape and molestation, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) has demanded that female swimming coaches be appointed and the coaching centres and institutional playgrounds brought under CCTV surveillance to ensure safety of women players.
NSUI Goa President Ahraz Mulla has petitioned President of India Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor of Goa Dr Mridula Sinha, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and others demanding that measures be put in to prevent molestation.
Stating that the recent incident of molestation of a minor by a swimming coach has shocked the entire student community in Goa, Mulla demanded that this has to be dealt with seriousness to avoid any further such incidents.
“We have noticed that many coaching centres in the State do not have enough female coaches for most of the games. This is the reason why females are forced to go to male coaches in Goa to realise their dream of becoming sportswomen,” Mulla said.
The recent incident has shocked all the parents also, and parents are now reluctant to send their children to any coach for any sports the child wants to play and learn to fulfill their dream, he added.
In their series of demands, NSUI has demanded appointment of female coaches in all the coaching centres, female PE teachers for female students in all the schools and higher secondary schools and lady lifeguards at swimming pools.
It has also asked for installation of CCTVs in all coaching centres and playgrounds of institutions.
