PANJIM: National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Tuesday threatened to boycott the Goa University (GU) council elections scheduled on October 16 if the elections are not held in an open system manner.
Addressing the media, NSUI president Ahraz Mulla said, “We have started a movement against the Goa University which is called as open elections movement where we are demanding that every student should get the right to vote for the university council which is not happening. In the current system 60 to 80 appointed students are given the right to vote for the University council and due to this kidnapping, bribing and other problems are increasing.”
He added, “We tried approaching the Vice Chancellor, Registrar and Governor but they refuse to give us an appointment,” Mulla added.
He said that NSUI has decided to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court because some of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations are not being followed and that the student wings of Aam Aadmi Party, Nationalist Congress Party, Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) are with them
“We are ready to boycott the election if open elections do not take place. I challenge the BJYM to boycott the election, because if they boycott open elections have to happen,” Mulla said.
