PANJIM: The National Students Union of India (NSUI), Goa unit has requested youth and especially those between 18 and 45 years of age to donate blood before the government starts vaccination programme for all above 18 years from May 1.

Reacting to renowned oncologist Dr Shekhar Salkar’s statement that once a person takes the vaccine he will not be able to donate blood for two-and-half-month, NSUI North Goa President Naushad Chowdhari said that all youth have a moral responsibility to donate blood before they take the vaccine. There is a likelihood of acute blood shortage in the future and to curb this unwanted situation all those planning to take the vaccine after May 1, should consider donating blood first, he said.

Chowdhari also appealed to people not to come out of their houses unnecessarily, “We are battling a pandemic and COVID-19 cases are rising at alarming rates. We should stay at home and observe all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) if at all we go out”.

“We also request those who have recovered from coronavirus to voluntarily donate their plasma and save lives. NSUI is trying to create a database of people who have recently recovered from the virus so that these people can donate their plasma to those in need.”
