PANJIM: The Goa unit of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Sunday demanded that the ongoing offline mode classes for Std X and XII be stopped; failing which it has threatened to gherao the Directorate of Education.

In a press statement issued, NSUI North Goa president Naushad Chowdhary claimed that there was less than 30 per cent of attendance in school on its first day on Saturday.

“In fear of COVID-19, parents are scared to send their children to school. If there are no students then why offline classes, continue online classes as it was before since it’s the safe mode of education and take practical’s and difficulties once a week,” he said.

He said it practically impossible to maintain the SOP laid down by the government as post school hours, the students are tend to meet their friends.

He also said having 12 students per class is not possible due to lack of teachers and infrastructure. “Putting mask throughout the day will be suffocating for students as well as teachers,” he stated.

Citing that other States have closed their schools after hundreds of students and staff were found positive, Chowdhary urged the chief minister not to repeat this in Goa.

“After knowing the outcome from other States still the CM wants to continue with the offline classes, why CM is so ignorant? Why CM is not listening to all the associations and PTA committees,” he questioned.

“Goa government is trying to play with students’ future by putting their life at risk, we demand to rollback the decision and continue online classes or else NSUI Goa will gherao the Education Department,” he warned.
