The State Nationalist Youth Congress on Friday urged Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to save the 363 houses situated at Khariwada in Vasco from demolition as ordered by the High Court of Bombay at Goa on a petition filed by the Mormugao Port Trust.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, President NYC Tanveer Khatib impressed upon the Government to be sympathetic towards these dwellings where traditional fishermen reside. Thirty of the houses have obtained a stay order, he informed.
Khatib said the act of MPT was unwarranted and in total violation of its earlier agreement of providing rehabilitation to these houses and then doing a volte-face by calling for demolition.
He observed, “The NYC at this juncture requests the Government’s intervention in the matter by getting a stay order on the demolition and if need be pass a legislation as was done in the case of Cidade de Goa.”
He said they would son submit a petition in this regard to the local MLA and also the Chief Minister.
