VALPOI, MAY 7
In what could be easier said than done, Home Minister Ravi Naik on Friday appealed to the new police constables not to bow down to the pressure of politicians, but to obey orders of their superiors in the police department.
The home minister was addressing the passing out parade of the 43rd batch of recruit police constables at Prerna Maidan, Police Training School (PTS), here.
“Goa is a peaceful state where the people of the all religions live peacefully. But some anti-social elements are trying to destroy the peace. Hence, the police should be alert and keep a watch on such anti-social elements, including Goondagiri,” said Naik.
The Home minister congratulated the Director General of Police (DGP) Bimsen Bassi and the Goa police for successfully arresting a Naxalist group and also solving many crimes.
“Goa Police is indeed performing well as many culprits involved in various crimes have been arrested. The law and order situation is good,” remarked the home minister.
Speaking on the ‘Red alert’ in Goa, Ravi Naik announced that the operation will continue for some more days and added that details of the naxalist group arrested would be made known to the public shortly.
Earlier in his welcome address, DGP Bassi brought to the notice of the home minister that there are only 5,000 personnel in Goa Police to man about 3700 sq. kms area, which is not enough.
“The strength is less and the government should increase the strength of Goa Police,” said DGP Bassi and thanked Naik for clearing the file regarding the recruitment of 157 traffic police and 79 drivers.
He reminded the new recruits that a police officer is expected to serve public so that they get justice and live in peace.
In all, 131 police recruits (114 males and 17 females) completed their 9-month training and the oath to the recruits was administered by Police Inspector Ulhas Dessai.
Various prizes were given to the police recruits. The best all-rounder prize went to Police Constable Seema Ram Gaonkar. In indoors, the first prize was also awarded to Police Constable Seema Ram Gaonkar, with Vidya Vasudev Gunjikar bagging the second prize.
