Observance in Mormugao is ‘religious’

VASCO: Mormugao taluka received overwhelming response from the locals, business houses, shops and other services as there was complete shutdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. 

Dabolim airport, Vasco railway station, bus stand, shops and other establishments observed Janta Curfew religiously on Sunday in Mormugao area. The essential services such as medical centres, pharmacies, fuel stations were functional.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday gave a call for one day Janta Curfew to break the chain of COVID-19 spread, citizens across Mormugao taluka observed that Janta Curfew in totality. 

A trip across Mormugao taluka gave a picture of total curfew on Sunday. People opined that they haven’t seen the port town in such a peaceful and in silent mode.

On Sunday major places such as Dabolim airport, airport junction wore a deserted look with hardly any passengers, vehicles plying on the road. The Bogmalo beach area which is otherwise one of the favourite places for tourists and locals was also without any presence of people.

Vegetable, fruit and fish markets in port town also observed the Janta Curfew completely as the outlets in these markets were shut on Sunday. The Vasco main junction, railway station which is otherwise crowded was also without any presence of people.

Councillor Deepak Naik opined that he has never seen the port town so quiet and people have obeyed the Janta Curfew sincerely. He also opined that having such Janta Curfew is definitely a good move to break the chain of COVID-19.

As instructed by the government, the essential services such as medical centres, pharmacies, fuel stations were operational in Mormugao. 

The local police patrolled the taluk to maintain law and order. Later in the evening, many households also showed their solidarity to this Janta Curfew by standing outside, on terrace and by clapping and hitting utensils.
