PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Monday issued notice to the State government over a petition filed by Romi Lipi Action Front seeking directions to the government to amend the Official Language Act for including Konkani in Roman script along with the existing Devanagari script. The notice is returnable in four weeks.
In the petition filed last week, the Front led by Wilson Mazarello said that the Goa Language Act, which restricts Konkani language to Devanagari script, was “unconstitutional, ultra vires, illegal and void”.
The petitioner has submitted that the power given under Article 345 of the Constitution of India to adopt any language does not empower the Government to restrict any language to a particular script, and further clarified it was not averse to the Devanagari script. The Front has demanded that both Roman and Devanagari scripts be used side by side.
