MARGAO: In response to the report in Herald’s Sunday edition, titled ‘Senior citizen injures back after tripping on slab left on bridge at Colva Beach’, the authorities were quick to react, and held a joint inspection on Tuesday. The officials gave assurances that the ongoing bridge refurbishment work would be completed soon.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas also invited the Colva senior citizen Laurente Rodrigues, who was injured in the fall, for the inspection. Viegas assured Rodrigues that the fault on the pedestrian bridge was being fixed.

The officials at the site added that they had placed a cement bag and stones on the bridge to warn people not to walk on that path, but that someone had removed the bag, which possibly led to the unfortunate incident.

Due to the rush of people visiting the beach, the two bridges had been kept open, they added.

The MLA also stated that the slab was a sample that had been made for epoxy coating. He added that the said epoxy coating had been ordered and that its application and final finishing with screed would be completed shortly. Viegas announced that he would invite fine arts students from  Benaulim to display their art on the bridges, giving them a public platform to display their talent. “My sincere thanks to Herald for publishing the incident on a priority basis, which cautioned people and avoided further mishaps. Captain Venzy took immediate action as well, which is appreciable,” said Rodrigues. He added that on Tuesday morning, the bridge was closed for repair work.
