Old CCMC building demolished, 10 yrs after it was declared unsafe

New 3-storey building estimated to cost Rs 19.5 cr, says chairperson; Merchants say it may be an election stunt

CURCHOREM: The old structure of one-storeyed commercial building of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) which was situated near the Curchorem railway station was finally demolished almost after 10 years of the proposal to construct the new three-storeyed building at an estimated cost of Rs 19.50 crores.

According to Chairperson Vishwas Sawant Dessai, the building will be constructed by the Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation (GIDC) on the 1800 square mts plot with all the modern facilities by spending around Rs.19.50 crores and will be completed within two years time.

“The new building is designed  to be built with all the modern required facilities including the vehicle parking facilities in the basement. It will be completed within two years and all the existing lessees will be accommodated and the rest shops will be given on rent,” said Sawant.

Describing it as an election stunt, Curchorem Merchant Association (CMA) President Rocha Pereira said that except the building plan nothing else has been shown to the stakeholders. “Chairperson verbally told the stakeholders that everything has been done to construct the new building but nothing has been brought to the table. Memorandum of Understanding has been signed but not with much details. Also no required relevant documentation has been produced including grants sanctioned order for the project. That is why it may be an election stunt,” said Pereira and added that people are wise enough now.

It may be recalled that in 2012 the PWD had declared the structure unsafe to occupy and therefore it was proposed to demolish it and construct a new building to accommodate the existing lessees with shops within the same area which they were occupying.
