Old Hasapur bridge unable to cope up with increasing traffic: Sarpanch

PERNEM: “The bridge in Hasapur-Chandel panchayat is narrow and old. The panchayat has taken resolution for the new bridge and a copy has been sent to the department concerned,” said sarpanch Tulshidas Gawas.

Since the international airport at Mopa began its operations the traffic on this bridge has increased manifold. This route is convenient to go to Maharashtra and hence, heavy container trucks too opt for this bridge. However, the bridge is at least 40 to 50 years old and is proving to be insufficient for the ever increasing traffic.

The bridge was built with the intention to make transportation convenient for locals and hence, it is narrow. The bridge is supposed to be used only by smaller vehicles, however goods trucks are also often seen travelling on this route.

Rest of the roads in Pernem are being widened and due to upcoming projects in the taluka, the traffic on the Hasapur bridge will only increase.

“The bridge is almost fifty years old and was built mostly for locals. Due to the increasing population, transportation and number of vehicles, this bridge cannot cope with the traffic and the panchayat passed a resolution for the government to build a parallel bridge standing beside the old bridge. I am confident that the MLA Praveen Arlekar will follow up with our request,” said sarpanch Gawas.
