MARGAO: Pre-monsoon showers have hit the State in the last few days, but work of desilting major storm water nullahs in Margao are yet to get underway till date.
The Old Market nullah and the SGPDA nullah are not yet desilted. That’s not all. While the Margao Municipal Council has carried out the work of desilting some drains and nullahs, many others have been left uncovered for reasons best known to the municipal officials.
Interestingly, when Herald brought the matter to the notice of the CO, Deepali Naik, she said that the Water Resources Department was scheduled to take up work of desilting of the two major nullahs ~ Old Market and SGPDA Market.
“This was decided at a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority way back in February when I was the Additional Collector”, she said. The CO, however, admitted that work on the desilting of many a storm water drain stands delayed and promised to call for a status report from the concerned officials on Tuesday. “I have called a meeting of the concerned officials on the exact status regarding the delay in desilting the storm water drains”, she said.
MMC sources informed that its technical section had awarded work orders regarding the desilting work around May 8. MMC officials could not satisfactory explain the delay in executing the work when the work orders were issued to the contractors.
