PANJIM: A 37-year-old patient from Mapusa, who was on dialysis for six years was the beneficiary of a kidney transplant recently after the successful transplant of a kidney harvested from a deceased patient, native of Belagavi, Karnataka residing in Goa. Post kidney transplant surgery, the patient has regained his normal health, appetite and wellbeing and his dialysis permanently stopped. The ailing Mapusa patient was undergoing dialysis for chronic kidney disease, while the donor, a 25-year-old, had suffered an acute head injury resulting in fronto-parietal-temporal subdural hematoma from an accident, which led to his demise.
As per allocation guidelines one of the donor’s kidneys was allocated to the Goa Medical College (GMC) patient and the other kidney was allocated to a private hospital by SOTTO. The kidney was swiftly transferred after retrieval from the cadaver at the GMC to the Hospital.
