PANJIM: For the first time in weeks of unrelenting COVID onslaught, the recoveries of patients outnumbered new infections in Goa on Sunday as 3,078 people were cured in a highest single day cure count, while 2,633 new cases were detected.

However, the mortality count continued to grow with 67 more deaths.

After a week-long surge in new cases in May, the daily caseload dropped sharply. However, the positivity rate continued to remain as high as 46 per cent.

The first nine days of May have reported 27,794 new cases, which means on an average 3,088 people tested positive for coronavirus every day during the month.

The mortality count since May 1 has been as high as 511. In a relief, 18,353 people have also recovered during this period.

After April that recorded over 33,013 cases, May is also turning out to be deadly for Goa with soaring number of daily cases and related deaths.

As on Sunday, State has 31,875 active patients.

The total caseload has touched 1,18,846 mark, of which 85,292 people have recovered. Also, 1,679 have succumbed to the infection so far.

Speaking to media persons, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant expressed confidence that with people’s support, health authorities will be in position to bring down the mortality rate in next eight to ten days.

“We have already imposed restrictions but people will have to co-operate. We have already streamlined the admission process in the hospitals to provide hassle-free treatment,” he said.

Sawant said, “With restrictions, Step-up hospitals, and other measures, we will be able to reduce the mortality count in the State.”
