On World No-Tobacco Day, gutka stalls do brisk business at Margao feast fair

MARGAO: On World No Tobacco Day, multiple stalls dedicated to selling tobacco products were  discovered at the ongoing feast fair in Margao. The Margao Municipal Council has pledged immediate action against the vendors involved. Local citizens have expressed anger and demanded accountability from the civic body and other authorities for not monitoring such activities.

During a visit to the feast fair, numerous stalls were observed openly selling tobacco items without any fear of consequences. Rohan Naik, who was present at the fair, expressed frustration and called for prompt action. He criticised the municipal council for not preventing such activities, especially on World No Tobacco Day.

In response to the issue raised by O Heraldo, Damodar Shirodkar, Chairperson of the MMC, assured that action would be taken against the stalls engaged in selling tobacco products. He emphasized that the MMC had not allocated any stalls for this purpose and instructed his staff to remove them immediately.

Ironically, an awareness event on the horrors  of tobacco use was held at the South Goa District hospital a short distance away on Wednesday.
