One arrested for assaulting CCP councillor

PANJIM: The Panjim police on Saturday arrested Moin Narangi of Caranzalem, a market vendor for allegedly assaulting Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) councillor Santosh alias Bansi Surlikar.

As per complaint filed by Santosh, he was initially cornered and roughed up by a group after he allegedly questioned some vendors over occuping more space than what was allocated to them by CCP.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Saturday at around 1.10 pm. Surlikar complained that Moin Narangi allegedly caught hold of his right hand and further pushed him while he was discharging his lawful duty as CCP market committee member along with CCP staff and workers. He stated that the accused further threatened him with dire consequences. 

The motive was over the issue of previously stopping his illegalities in the market by seizing watermelons along with CCP workers. 

The Panjim police have registered a case against Narangi under Sections 353,323 and 506(ii) of IPC in this connection stands registered. The police arrested Narangi, who was later released on bail. 

Narangi later told media persons that the CCP staff had confiscated his six readymade shirts and four raincoats claiming that he had encroached on public passages in the market. He said that he went to pay the fine, he was first to pay Rs 1,500, then Rs 1,000 and then took Rs 300 and returned his good in which one raincoat was missing.
