PANJIM: The special police team has finally achieved a breakthrough in the case of rape and murder of a young woman, with the arrest of a person on Saturday.
While police are tight lipped on the details of the investigation, it is learnt that the accused was taken to the crime site at the helipad where the body was found, and later to Crime Branch where his interrogation continued till late night. The North District Police had formed a 15-member team comprising of police inspectors and other staff to crack the case.
Old Goa police had not suspected any foul play on discovering the body dumped at the isolated spot, but the post mortem on Thursday revealed that the woman had been raped and then strangulated to death. Police thereafter registered a case of rape and murder against unknown person/s and formed a special team to nab the accused. The 24-year-old woman used to sell candles at Old Goa to earn her living.
