One four-lane of new Zuari Bridge to open by June end: Guv

Says the Greenfield International Airport at Mopa is expected to be completed by August

PANJIM: Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on Sunday said that one of the four-lane sections of the new cable-stayed Zuari Bridge will be thrown open for the public by end of June. 

In his message on the eve of 35th Goa Statehood Day, Pillai said the Greenfield International Airport at Mopa is expected to be completed by August, this year.  

“…prestigious project is Zuari Bridge costing Rs 2,530 crore which is progressing rapidly. It is expected that one of four lanes will be thrown open to the public by the end of next month,” the Governor said in his message. 

He further said that the government has proposed to build two Observatory Towers on Zuari Bridge at no cost of the Government but “will earn revenue to the State as a major tourist attraction”.

Pillai said that the prestigious International airport at Mopa is scheduled to be completed by August, 2022 at a cost of Rs 2,615 crore. 

“The six-lane express highway from NH66 to the airport covering a distance of 6.5 kms and involving a cost of Rs 769 crore is under construction,” he informed. 

Governor expressed confidence that the youth from the State will be able to tap the potential of the Aviation Skilled Development Centre, which is fully functional, for job opportunities. 

Besides, he said that the four laning of NH66 from Karaswada to Bambolim at a cost of Rs 1,672 crore has been completed. 

“Several other road projects have been completed and the works of many water supply and sewerage projects are in brisk progress,” the Governor said.

In his message, the Governor made special mention of the fact that the work of the new Durbar Hall at Raj Bhavan, with a capacity of 800, inaugurated last year, will be useful to conduct many of its big events and save a lot of expenditure that earlier had to be incurred for major events.

The Governor also said that the tourism industry, though suffered during the COVID pandemic, is gradually recovering and has a bright future.
