CANACONA: One person was killed when a slab of an under-construction building collapsed at Sadolxem in Canacona taluka on Wednesday, while five other workers and the contractor suffered injuries.
Sources at Canacona police station said that they received an emergency call at around 6 pm on Wednesday that a cement slab of an under construction building at Sadolxem had collapsed and some workers were trapped under the debris.
Police said that a team of police and a fire tender was immediately dispatched and by the time they reached the construction site the other labourers with the help of locals had rescued all the six persons trapped under the construction debris.
Sources at the construction site said that the poles used to support the centring plates unable to bear the load, resulting in collapse of the cement slab part of which was cast on the previous day and the other part was in the process of casting.
While casting the slab, there were around 30 labourers on the slab.
at a height of around 12 mts from the ground and most of them escaped unhurt. It is suspected that the Goutham Mandal, 35, a native of West Bengal was employed as a centring carpenter and must have been under the collapsed slab when the slab caved in.
Sources at the site said that amongst the injured was the contractor of the building, who was assigned to cast the slab.
Police said that after conducting the scene panchanama, the body of the victim labourer was sent to Hospicio hospital at Margao for post mortem and preservation.
While the other injured after receiving initial treatment at Canacona health centre where shifted to Hospicio hospital.
Police said that they are investigating the matter to find out whose fault it was and accordingly a case will be registered they said.
