PANJIM: More than a week after Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party’s (MGP) central committee resolved to withdraw support from the BJP-led coalition government, the party is yet to submit letter of withdrawal to Governor Dr Mridula Sinha.
The central committee of MGP, which is left with only one MLA — Sudin Dhavalikar, had on April 11 resolved to withdraw its support to the government and also decided to extend support to the Congress for the Lok Sabha elections in both the parliamentary constituencies. The party had extended its support to late Manohar Parrikar to form a coalition government after February 2017 elections.
Addressing media persons on Thursday, MGP working President Narayan Sawant sounded confused over the fact whether the party has submitted letter of withdrawal to Governor or not. “I think the letter has not reached the Governor…we had passed the resolution and accordingly, the letter was drafted and handed over to President Deepak Dhavlikar, who is the authority to submit the letter,” he said.
However, Sawant maintained that “Whether we submit the letter today or tomorrow, it does not make much difference for the government as the party has only one MLA. We have taken the resolution and the letter will be submitted.”
The MGP decided to withdraw support from the BJP-led government after the saffron party engineered a split in MGP’s two MLAs — Manohar Ajgaonkar and Deepak Pawaskar – who later merged with the legislative wing of BJP.
Meanwhile, the party has condemned BJP national leader Nitin Gadkari for urging the voters to eliminate the MGP. “It is an insult to the State’s oldest regional party which has played crucial role in forming various State governments since liberation,” Sawant said.
He has asked BJP and its allies to desist from making such derogatory statements against MGP.
